The staff and Trustees of the Dunhill Medical Trust are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Trustee, Professor Stuart Parker.
Stuart joined us as a Trustee in 2019 bringing his unique blend of intellectual rigour, compassion and dry humour to the role. An enthusiastic member of our Research Grants Committee, as well as a former lay member of our Investment Committee, he was always well-prepared and ready to ask thoughtful and incisive questions, helping us to navigate our way through often complex matters to reach robust decisions. We also appreciated his willingness to volunteer for the more mundane, but essential, administrative duties.
Stuart trained in medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and subsequently worked in the TNO Institute for Experimental Gerontology, Rijswijk, the Netherlands and the University of Leicester. He took up a Chair at the University of Sheffield in the Barnsley General Hospital NHS Trust in March 2000 and returned to Newcastle in July 2013 as the William Leach Professor of Geriatric Medicine. He served a three-year term as NIHR CRN Theme lead for Ageing, Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Neurological Disorders and Genetics between (2015-18) and, following formal retirement, continued in part time and occasional clinical practice.
