Award amount: £5,000
artsdepot is an arts charity based in North London. At its venue, it houses 2 theatres, a gallery and studios, as well as a café and bar. Through its work, it engages a wide audience in its programme of arts and cultural activities.
artsdepot decided to establish a new arts themed lunch club for socially isolated people, in response to Barnet Council’s decision to end its meal delivery service. By attending this lunch club, it was intended that it would help socially isolated older people develop new social networks, improve their health and well-being and encourage greater engagement with the arts programme at artsdepot, particularly their matinee programme.
As a result of the grant:
- 150 socially isolated older people aged 75 years and over have been introduced to Arts Depot and signposted to a broad programme of activities, including regular dance and arts workshops for older people.
- artsdepot have provided 489 home cooked lunches at 19 arts events, which has provided opportunities for isolated older people to develop new friendships, leading to further opportunities to socialise and reduce loneliness.
- artsdepot have established partnerships with AgeUK, Jewish Care and a number of local care homes and sheltered housing groups, which have been vital in ensuring the services are accessed by socially isolated older people.
The project has successfully established new arts attendance patterns, engaging socially isolated older people in positive creative activities that improve health and well-being.
A small amount of funding really can go a very long way.
