A grant of £22,500 over 3 years for the Silver Cyclists Project.
Life Cycle offers a programme of regular group cycle rides to help people stay active in older age. This project allows older people to enjoy a range of cycle rides of 10-30 miles in the Bristol area and occasionally further afield. They are organised monthly in winter and fortnightly in summer in small groups of 15-20. Since offering the rides the older people have organised their own Facebook page and meet independently of Life Cycle for monthly coffee mornings to maintain regular contact during winter. The participants regularly suggest rides or outings to areas of interest such as the local wildlife trusts and organised rides with experts covering topics such as dawn chorus, bat safaris and tree planting. Since joining the Silver Cyclists the majority of older people now use their bike regularly for every day transport and some have also started to explore Wales by taking their bicycles on the train network.
